FOREIGN SECRETARY MEADE VISITS THE MEXICAN COMMUNITY IN THE NEW YORK METROPOLITAN AREA

Press Release 343

September 24, 2013

Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade visited the Mexican community living in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. According to the U.S. Census, more than 700,000 Mexicans or individuals of Mexican descent live in these three states, all of which fall under the jurisdiction of Mexico’s Consulate General in New York City.

The Foreign Secretary traveled to the city of Yonkers, New York, with one of the two "Consulates on Wheels" that the Consulate General operates. Under this program, consulates provide regular services throughout their areas of coverage, according to a previously announced schedule and with special emphasis on places with a large Mexican population. In the New York area, the mobile consulate most frequently travels to cities such as New Brunswick and Passaic, New Jersey, and Bridgeport, Connecticut.

It is estimated that almost a third of the nearly 200,000 people in Yonkers are Mexican or of Mexican descent. One of the main activities of the “Consulate on Wheels” is to issue passports and consular ID cards. It has served nearly 3,000 people in that city since early 2012.

During his visit, the Foreign Secretary spoke with Mexican citizens who had come for their appointments, and he had the opportunity to answer their questions and address their concerns. He also met with consular personnel, whom he recognized for their work on behalf of the Mexican communities.

Later, he held a working lunch at the Consulate General with a group of Mexicans living in the tri-state area, including individuals from community organizations and from corporate, financial, academic and cultural circles. The Undersecretary for North America, Sergio Alcocer; the Mexican ambassador in the U.S., Eduardo Medina Mora; and the Consul General in New York, Sandra Fuentes-Berain, attended the event.

The Mexican government, through its embassy and consular network in the United States, will continue to provide the services, assistance and protection required by all Mexicans abroad.
