MEXICO EXPRESSES ITS CONCERN ABOUT THE TENSION ON THE KOREAN PENINSULA

On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry expresses its concern for the rising tension on the Korean peninsula, following the announcement of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea that it will soon launch a rocket to put an observation satellite in orbit.

Mexico reminds the parties of the need to comply with the United Nations Security Council resolutions, especially the mandatory Chapter 7 provisions that require the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to “suspend missile launches."

Mexico joins the international community in calling for the People's Republic of Korea to exercise restraint and refrain from any action that might aggravate the situation on the Peninsula.

Mexico hopes for the swift resumption of the Six-Party Dialogue in order to make progress with negotiating the denuclearization of the Peninsula. Mexico also repeats its call for a peaceful and negotiated reunification of the Korean nation, in order to consolidate peace, stability and progress in the region.
