JORGE CASTRO-VALLE IS APPOINTED UNDERSECRETARY FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN The Foreign Ministry reports that President Felipe Calderón has appointed Ambassador Jorge Castro-Valle Kuehne as Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean effective today. Ambassador Castro Valley has been a career diplomat since joining the Mexican Foreign Service in 1974. He was promoted to ambassador in 1994. He earned his law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), where he also worked at the Institute for Legal Research. He has held various positions in the Foreign Ministry, including that of Secretary to the Foreign Secretary, Director General for North America and Secretary to the Undersecretary for Economic Affairs. Abroad, he served as ambassador of Mexico in Sweden (and concurrently in Latvia and Lithuania) from 2001-2003 and Germany (2003-2009). He was also deputy chief of mission at the embassies in the United States, Britain and Canada. In addition, he has been posted to Mexico’s diplomatic missions in Austria and the German Democratic Republic. Since April 2009, he has served as the Foreign Ministry’s Director General of Protocol.
