MEXICO MOURNS THE DEATH OF CARDINAL RODOLFO QUEZADA TORUÑO The Foreign Ministry, on behalf of the Mexican government, expresses its deepest condolences to Guatemala for the death today in Guatemala City of Cardinal Rodolfo Ignacio Quezada Toruño. Quezada Toruño was a peacemaker in his daily work and also in his role as President of the National Reconciliation Commission and mediator between the government and the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG) during the negotiations that resulted in the signing on December 29, 1996 of the final peace agreement. The peace accords, endorsed by the United Nations, closed the chapter of domestic armed conflict in Guatemala that had lasted for more than three decades. The Mexican government extends its sympathy to the families and friends of Monsignor Rodolfo Quezada Toruño and to the people and government of Guatemala for this irreparable loss. |
