MEXICO’S G20 SHERPA, AMBASSADOR LOURDES ARANDA, IN NEW YORK ON JUNE 4-5

• Mexico’s G20 Sherpa met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

• She attended a meeting of the General Assembly to make a progress report on the preparations for the Los Cabos Leaders’ Summit.

• As part of the expanded dialogue, the Mexican Sherpa met with regional and interest groups and businessmen and women.

During her trip to New York, the Mexican Sherpa for the Group of Twenty (G20), Ambassador Lourdes Aranda, discussed the progress made with each of the Mexican Presidency’s priorities and she continued the expanded dialogue with other actors.
With UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the Mexican Sherpa reviewed the agreements reached in the various working groups of the G20 and thanked him for the contribution of the UN and seven other international organizations to preparations for the G20 Leaders’ Summit.

The Secretary-General acknowledged the Mexican Presidency’s commitment to promoting development with an emphasis on green and inclusive growth, and to strengthening the synergies between the G20 and the United Nations. The Mexican Sherpa also discussed the progress made on the priorities of the Mexican Presidency with the UN General Assembly, continuing an ongoing dialogue that has enriched the work of the G20 in recent months.

Ambassador Aranda reported to the UN General Assembly on the measures taken by the G20 countries to continue contributing to the stability of the global economy, the reform of the international financial system and to strong, sustainable and balanced growth, as well as the various conclusions of the ministerial meetings and working groups on jobs, food security, development, green growth and trade, among others.
The UN Secretary-General and President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), as well as the representatives of various Member States, spoke in praise of the Mexican Presidency of the G20, especially regarding the priorities it had chosen and the transparent and inclusive way in which it had consulted with numerous governmental and nongovernmental actors.

The Secretary-General acknowledged the leadership and vision of President Calderón and again offered the support of the UN for the success of the Los Cabos summit, which he believes is vital for addressing the financial crisis and for the recovery of global economic growth.

As part of the expanded dialogue with non-member countries and civil society, the Mexican Sherpa also met with the President of the Group of 77 and with the Global Governance Group (3G) and business representatives.
 
The UN Member States and other actors acknowledged that the Mexican Presidency of the G20 has been marked by its transparency and openness, as reflected in its unprecedented effort to develop a close relationship with civil organizations, trade unions, the business sector, academics, youth, and non-member countries, international organizations and regional bodies.
