MEXICO AND SPAIN AGREE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF MEXICANS BEING TURNED AWAY AT SPANISH AIRPORTS Considering the excellent relations between Mexico and Spain and the fact that Mexican tourists are welcome in Spain, Mexican Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa and Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, in Chile for the 4th Pacific Alliance Summit and equally concerned about the cases of Mexican citizens who are turned away from the Madrid and Barcelona airports, reiterate their firm commitment to finding a solution to any problems that have arisen, helping to facilitate the entry and travels of Mexican tourists and eliminating any cases of tourists who are turned away unnecessarily. The two officials agreed to hold a meeting in Spain before the end of June between the consular and immigration officials of both countries to reexamine the situation and take immediate steps on border controls and, specifically, to clarify, simplify and relax the requirements for the letter of invitation, in addition to providing assistance to Mexicans on their arrival in Spain. The Spanish side reaffirmed its commitment to safeguard the rights of Mexicans who are not admitted and to help them gain access to both their belongings and to consular assistance immediately. Both officials reiterated that there is an excellent level of cooperation and friendship between the two countries and a mutual desire to work closely and productively together on this matter. |
