AMEXCID MEETS WITH INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS IN MEXICO

The Executive Director of the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), Rogelio Granguillhome, met today with members of various international agencies and organizations in Mexico to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by AMEXCID.

Ambassador Granguillhome explained the agency’s program as well as some of its legal and administrative aspects as established by the Law on International Development Cooperation, under which AMEXID was created as a decentralized agency of the Foreign Ministry.

The ambassador introduced AMEXCID’s managing directors, who explained their responsibilities. He said that the creation of AMEXCID had strengthened Mexico's presence in the arena of international cooperation by allowing for a more direct dialogue and effective cooperation with organizations from around the world, including in emerging countries.

The meeting was held in the Foreign Ministry with members of 13 international agencies and organizations to celebrate the agency’s creation and to explain its priorities, its channels of communication with other countries, its sources of financing and the way it cooperates with its counterparts around the world, among other topics.

Ambassador Granguillhome said that AMEXCID had created new opportunities for Mexican cooperation, and will be strengthened by the International Cooperation Fund which will start operating with government funds in 2013. This will create ample opportunities for bilateral, triangular and multilateral cooperation with all sorts of agencies around the world. The ambassador said the agency would remain in contact with those present at the meeting.

Attending the meeting were the Mexican representatives of the international development cooperation agencies of Germany, Spain, France, Japan, USA and Canada. Also present were the representatives of the European Union, the Organization of American States (OAS) and various United Nations agencies: the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT).

This meeting was the first in a series of talks that the AMEXCID Executive Director will hold with academia, the private sector, civil society organizations and local governments.
