THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT WELCOMES A SETTLEMENT THAT BENEFITS MEXICAN WORKERS IN THE UNITED STATES

The government of Mexico welcomes the settlement reached between the U.S. Department of Labor and Peri & Sons Farms, which grows, packs and ships onions. The company agreed to pay more than 2.3 million dollars in back pay to 1,365 Mexican citizens with H2-A visas. The company had not paid the workers as set forth in their contracts, even paying them less than minimum wage for a period of time.

The Foreign Ministry, through the consulate in Las Vegas, has followed up on these complaints since they were presented initially. Under the special legal program (PROTEJE) created by the Foreign Ministry in 2010, the Mexican citizens filed a class action suit against Peri & Sons Farms for additional financial compensation. The suit was filed at the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

The Foreign Ministry reiterates its commitment to defending the rights of Mexicans abroad, regardless of their immigration status.
