MEXICO REGRETS THE DEATH OF FORMER CHILEAN FOREIGN MINISTER ENRIQUE SILVA CIMMA On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry laments the death of former Chilean Foreign Minister Enrique Silva Cimma and conveys its condolences to his family and the Chilean government. In addition to being a lawyer and prominent academic, Enrique Silva Cimma was a public figure for many years in Chile. In 1990, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Patricio Aylwin (1990-1994). He also served as Comptroller General of the Republic and as a Senator. With Cimma Silva as Foreign Minister, Chile followed an active foreign policy and sought the country’s reinsertion into the international arena after its return to democracy. The former Foreign Minister once said that he had managed to overcome "absences and silences" by restoring diplomatic relations with several countries, including Mexico, which resumed its ties with Chile on March 24, 1990, and by joining the Rio Group in October of that year, as well. |
