FOREIGN SECRETARY PATRICIA ESPINOSA MEETS WITH THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF UNESCO Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa met with the Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, in the agency's headquarters in Paris, France. She was accompanied by the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo, and Mexico’s ambassador in France and its Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Carlos de Icaza. The Foreign Secretary and the Director General discussed the challenges for UNESCO and the prospects and opportunities for continuing to strengthen cooperation between Mexico and the organization. The Foreign Secretary reiterated to the Director General Mexico’s commitment to multilateralism and to UNESCO’s goals. She also encouraged the Director General to pursue reform of the organization so that it can affirm its leadership and importance in its areas of interest. During her visit to UNESCO, Foreign Secretary Espinosa also met with a Mexican citizen, Pilar Alvarez Laso, who serves as UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, one of the most senior posts in UNESCO. The Foreign Secretary and Alvarez Laso discussed possibilities for cooperation in anti-doping and sports, bioethics and social inclusion.
