MEXICO CONDEMNS THE VIOLENCE IN SYRIA On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry expresses its deep concern at the continuing violence in Syria, which to date has killed thousands of people, injured many more and created refuges and internally displaced persons. Mexico reiterates its call to halt the violence immediately, and urges all parties to fully respect human rights and to engage in an inclusive political discussion to find a solution to the crisis in Syria. Mexico joins UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in appealing to the parties to cooperate fully with Kofi Annan, Joint Special Envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States, and to make progress in taking the necessary steps to end the violence and fulfill the hopes of the Syrian people. Mexico also joins the UN Secretary-General in calling on the States with influence over the parties to pressure them, both separately and together, for an immediate cessation of hostilities. It calls on the Security Council members, especially the permanent ones, to reach the agreements needed to end the violence and ensure compliance with the Security Council resolutions. |
