THE MEXICAN SHERPA, AMBASSADOR LOURDES ARANDA, DISCUSSES THE OUTCOME OF THE G20 SUMMIT

• The Mexican Sherpa participated in informal plenary meeting of the UN membership to discuss the agreements reached at the G20 Summit in June.

• Ambassador Lourdes Aranda also met with the Global Governance Group (3G) and a group of experts to present an overview of the Summit's achievements and leaders' commitments.

Ambassador Lourdes Aranda, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs and Mexican G20 Sherpa, presented the outcome of the Los Cabos Summit that was held on June 18-19. These meetings are part of the extended dialog of the second half of the Mexican presidency of the G20.

The Mexican Sherpa participated in an informal plenary meeting convened by General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al Nasser, where she  explained the achievements and commitments of the G20 stemming from the Los Cabos Summit.  Ambassador Aranda highlighted the agreements to restore global economic growth, financial stability and the promotion of quality jobs. She also said that progress was made on issues such as inclusive green growth, infrastructure and food security.

She expressed appreciation for the support and commitment received from the international organizations and noted that their recommendations enriched the leaders' discussions at the Summit. She also emphasized that the cooperation of the United Nations during the preparations for the Summit was very productive and that it contributed to a transparent and open process.  She offered to continue working with the UN and with the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council.

At the meeting, UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon highlighted the issues common to the G20 and Rio +20: inclusive green growth, the creation of safe, quality jobs, and promoting financial stability and the international financial system reform to address the crisis and current needs.

Ambassador Lourdes Aranda also met with the Global Governance Group (3G) to present the agreements reached at the June summit. The 30 3G members presented a paper expressing support for the Mexican presidency of the G20, which has demonstrated itself to be inclusive and transparent. They also welcomed the Los Cabos Action Plan for Growth and Jobs.

The Stanley Foundation (a research center), which participated in the Think 20 meeting organized by the Mexican presidency last February, in conjunction with New York University, held a meeting with a group of experts to exchange views on the Los Cabos summit.  In a frank and open dialogue, Ambassador Aranda said that the second half of the Mexican presidency would be dedicated to continuing to listen to various viewpoints and to discussing the issues with nonmembers of the G20.   This meeting was a follow-up to other meetings held with research centers prior to the Summit of Leaders. The Sherpa also emphasized that, in the coming months, the Mexican Presidency will focus on implementing what was agreed at the Summit and on delivering a solid agenda and Russia to chair the G20 since December 2012.
