MEXICO WELCOMES THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESQUIPULAS II
AGREEMENT

The Mexican government congratulates the people and governments of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica for the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Procedure to Establish a Firm and Lasting Peace in Central America (known as the Esquipulas II Agreement), which was signed in Guatemala City on August 7, 1987.

Mexico acknowledges the historical importance of the agreement, which was the result of efforts to achieve reconciliation in the region. These efforts were initiated by the Contadora Group, which was promoted by Mexico and established in 1983 with Venezuela, Colombia and Panama. The Contadora Group was joined by a Support Group made up of Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay.

The Esquipulas II process was given impetus by the then Presidents of Guatemala, Vinicio Cerezo, and Costa Rica, Oscar Arias, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1987. Presidents Jose Napoleon Duarte of El Salvador, Jose Azcona Hoyo of Honduras and Daniel Ortega Saavedra of Nicaragua also signed the agreement.
