THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT’S POSITION ON THE DEATH OF A MEXICAN CITIZEN ON THE BORDER BETWEEN LAREDO AND NUEVO LAREDO ON MONDAY

The Foreign Ministry strongly protests the incident that occurred on Monday, September 3rd on the border between Nuevo Laredo and Laredo. The information available at this time indicates that a Mexican citizen lost his life after being shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

The Mexican government has repeatedly said that the disproportionate use of lethal force by officers engaged in immigration control is unacceptable. Therefore, it is essential to clarify the event.

The Mexican consulate in Laredo immediately sent an official communication to the U.S. authorities requesting a thorough investigation resulting, if applicable, in appropriate sanctions. This message was also sent through diplomatic channels. The Mexican government will await the information and conclusions presented by the U.S. authorities.

The Foreign Ministry has instructed the Mexican consulate in Laredo to provide the family of the Mexican citizen with all necessary legal advice and consular assistance. It will also assist all of the Mexican agencies involved in the case with the actions they undertake within their respective jurisdictions.

The Mexican government reiterates its commitment to continue working with the U.S. government to ensure full implementation of the Mexico-United States Joint Statement on the Prevention of Violence in the Border Region and the Protocols for Border Violence Prevention, in order to prevent and respond to situations of this nature.
