MEXICO PARTICIPATES IN THE MEETING OF MESOAMERICAN FOREIGN MINISTERS During the 67th United Nations General Assembly taking place in New York, Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa participated in a breakfast meeting organized by Honduran Foreign Secretary Arturo Corrales for the Mesoamerican Foreign Ministers to strengthen the Tuxtla Mechanism. The Foreign Ministers held a fruitful working session during which they discussed key regional issues and renewed their commitment to the Tuxtla forum. Foreign Secretary Espinosa said the Tuxtla Mechanism is of the highest priority for Mexico. It was established at Mexico’s initiative and has become the main forum for political dialogue and consensus in the Mesoamerican region, and Mexico is keenly interested in continuing to strengthen it. She said that the Tuxtla forum’s main goals, designed to promote a high-level political dialogue, consolidate peace in the Mesoamerican region, strengthen democratic processes, provide a basis of institutional cooperation and consensus and to forge joint regional strategies on issues of common interest, are still valid in the context of the region’s political pluralism. The Mexican Foreign Secretary stressed that the political dialogue has addressed the most important issues on the current Mesoamerican calendar, such as strengthening and consolidating democratic institutions and processes; giving renewed impetus to regional cooperation strategies aimed at strengthening the fight against transnational organized crime; a comprehensive approach to migration in our region and in the international forums; and a rejection of initiatives, bills and laws put in place by the developed countries that criminalize migration, among others. In order to strengthen the political dialogue, the Foreign Ministers agreed to establish a flexible program of ministerial consultations in order to address issues of common concern and coordinate positions between our countries in a timely fashion. They also agreed to hold a joint meeting of foreign ministers and energy officials in October to make progress with the project to interconnect the electrical grids of the countries of the region. |
