G20: THE FOURTH MEETING OF THE DEVELOPMENT WORKING GROUP BEGINS IN BALI, INDONESIA WITH A WORKSHOP ON ACCOUNTABILITY • Review of the progress made on the priorities established during the Mexican presidency: green growth, food security and infrastructure. • The results will be evaluated and a system for accountability will be established. The last G20 meeting on development under Mexico’s presidency began today in Bali, Indonesia with a workshop on accountability. It will be followed by the last meeting of the year of the Development Working Group (DWG) on October 4-5. The meetings will be chaired by the Executive Director of the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), Rogelio Granguillhome. Their purpose is to follow up on the agreements on development reached at the Los Cabos Leaders’ Summit and to agree on the steps to be taken in the future to give continuity to the agenda in coming years. The Mexican delegation consists of officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Environment and Natural Resources. Attending the meetings are representatives from the G20 countries, various international organizations, guest countries and experts in various fields. At the DWG meeting, the progress made on the priority issues of the Mexican presidency - inclusive green growth, food security and infrastructure – will be reviewed in addition to the other topics on the DWG agenda, including social protection, reducing the cost of remittances, private investment and trade, among others. It is hoped that the meeting will produce a clear vision of how to advance development issues within the G20 in the lead-up to the Russian presidency. Following up on the leaders’ mandate for the DWG at the Los Cabos Summit, those present at the meeting will also begin to establish a method for evaluation and accountability for the G20 commitments on development. The workshop will include experts and government representatives who will begin looking for models and laying the foundation for this method, requested at the Los Cabos Leaders’ Summit. These meetings were preceded by an International Conference on Infrastructure Financing that was sponsored by the Indonesian government on October 2nd to discuss the issue of investment in infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region given the global economic slowdown, with emphasis on public-private projects. Mexico has shown clear leadership throughout and up until the end of its presidency of the G20. |
