UNDERSECRETARY JULIAN VENTURA MEETS WITH CALIFORNIA STATE SENATORS

Undersecretary for North America Julian Ventura met today with a delegation from the California State Senate led by California State Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.

The meeting is part of the intense relationship the Mexican government has sought with elected officials and public servants in California, a state with a large Mexican community and ten Mexican consulates.

Undersecretary Ventura thanked the Senators for visiting and for their interest in strengthening their contacts and cooperation with the Mexican government and civil society. He acknowledged that the state has adopted positions that recognize the many contributions made by Mexican immigrants to the communities in which they reside.

There was agreement on the importance of coordinating the work of both countries in areas such as renewable energy and border infrastructure.

Senator Steinberg referred to California’s initiative to open trade promotion offices in its most important trading partners, such as Mexico. The Mexican market is the principal international destination for California products. In 2011, total trade between Mexico and California was close to 60 billion dollars.

Undersecretary Ventura and the state lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen their dialogue and cooperation on issues of shared interest, and to strengthen the strategic relationship between Mexico and California.

In addition to Senator Steinberg, the bipartisan delegation consisted of Senators Robert S. Huff, Joel Anderson, Lou Correa, Kevin de Leon and Ricardo Lara.
