MEXICO AND OMAN REAFFIRM THEIR FRIENDLY RELATIONSHIP AND COOPERATION

Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Lourdes Aranda met today with Ambassador Ahmed Bin Yousuf Obaid Al-Harthi, Undersecretary for Diplomatic Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of Oman.

The two officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish regularly scheduled consultations on matters of common interest, which will expand cooperation between the two countries. Subsequently, the first consultations were held under the co-chairmanship of both undersecretaries to assess the current bilateral relationship.

Undersecretary Aranda told her counterpart the Mexican government is interested in strengthening the political dialogue with Oman. This meeting, the first high-level meeting since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries, opens a new stage in the relationship.

Both officials agreed on the need to increase bilateral trade and investment. Undersecretary Aranda also invited Undersecretary Al-Harthi to help identify opportunities for technical and scientific cooperation and to nominate candidates for the scholarships that the Mexican government offers students and Omani diplomats.

The two officials discussed the situation in their respective regions: Latin America and the Middle East.

Mexico and Oman established diplomatic relations on July 31, 1975.
