MEXICO ELECTED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE UNIVERSAL POSTAL UNION

Mexico was elected today to the Board of Directors of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) for 2012-2016 during the 25th UPU Congress, which was held from September 24 to October 15 in Doha, Qatar.

The Board of Directors is comprised of 41 countries and is responsible for ensuring the continuity of the UPU’s work between congresses. It also supervises its activities and studies regulatory, administrative, legislative and legal affairs. It can also take steps to resolve urgent issues and approves the biennial budget of the UPU, as well as the subsequent annual adjustments.

As a result of the recent technological and legal changes, as well as the changing habits of society, one of Mexico’s goals will be to help create a modern regulatory framework and planning tools that keep the international postal service current. It will also seek to assist States to update their government policies in this area.

By managing one of the largest mail volumes in the world, Mexico has acquired extensive experience in how to develop a modern postal service, which will enable it to contribute effectively to improving the international postal service according to the new needs and challenges that have arisen.

By participating in the UPU, the Mexican government will help the global network to carry out its duties efficiently by ensuring effective communication between countries and a stronger international postal service.
