FOREIGN SECRETARY PATRICIA ESPINOSA HONORS FOUR MEXICAN AMBASSADORS IN COSTA RICA

• Unveils plaques in the Mexican embassy in Costa Rica

During her visit to Costa Rica to install the Strategic Partnership Council of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Mexico and Costa Rica, Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa honored four Mexican Ambassadors for their distinguished diplomatic service and the bonds of friendship they forged with Costa Rica.

In addition to being one of the most emblematic cities in San José, the Mexican embassy in Costa Rica has a rich history. The “Mexican Embassy Pact” that ended the last civil war and led to the Costa Rica of today, the unarmed, civilian, social, democratic and internationally accountable nation the world knows today, was signed there on April 19, 1948.

Therefore, one of the rooms in the embassy has now been named for Ambassador Carlos Dario Ojeda Rubira, who had the honor of hosting the signing of this important agreement. This Mexican diplomat, who served as ambassador to Costa Rica from 1947 to 1948, had the foresight to facilitate the meeting of the parties in conflict to contribute to peace and the democratic and social development of Costa Rica.

Another room was named the first occupant of the embassy, Antonio Mediz Bolio, writer and diplomat from the Yucatan and author of, among other works, The Land of the Pheasant and the Deer, and a translation of the Chilam Balam of Chumayel. He served as ambassador to Costa Rica from 1925 to 1932.
The third room honors Ambassador Luis Padilla Nervo, one of the most famous Mexican diplomats, President of the UN General Assembly, first ambassador of Mexico to the United Nations and Foreign Secretary, who also represented Mexico in Costa Rica as ambassador from 1934 to 1937.

The fourth room was named for Ambassador Carmen Moreno Toscano, the first woman to be appointed an Eminent Ambassador in the Mexican Foreign Service. During her tenure in Costa Rica (1990-1995) she inaugurated the Mexico Institute. She was also Ambassador to Guatemala, Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS) and Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Moreno Toscano, who was present at the ceremony, currently serves as Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission of Women.

The Mexican embassy in Costa Rica has been enriched by the life and work of several of the ambassadors who have served there, such as those honored today, who distinguished themselves both in diplomacy and in literature, or in both areas simultaneously.

The unveiling of the four plaques highlights the illustrious past of this embassy, which will continue to play a role in forging more historical, diplomatic and cultural ties to bind us to Costa Rica.
