CONSULAR ASSISTANCE FOR MEXICANS ON THE EAST COAST OF THE U.S. AFFECTED BY HURRICANE SANDY The Mexican government has taken various steps to provide consular assistance to all Mexicans in the northeastern United States who have been affected by hurricane Sandy. As always during emergencies, the Mexican consulates in the area are in constant communication with the federal and local authorities responsible for emergency response. Starting days before the hurricane struck, information and recommendations were broadcast and updated on the social networks and by local, primarily Hispanic, media and Mexican associations in various towns. The emergency contact information of the consulates for Mexican citizens in need of assistance are available on the websites of each consulate, which also have useful information such as the location of shelters and the helplines set up by officials and various aid organizations. Because of the restrictions on public transportation, electricity and people’s movements in various areas, the consulates are operating, but are only partially staffed according to prior planning. Each has personnel in contact with the U.S. civil protection officials and Mexican organizations in the affected areas, and are answering the calls of Mexican citizens. Appointments and customer service will resume as usual as soon as the conditions in each area permit. The Mexican government expresses its solidarity with the communities affected by the hurricane and reiterates its commitment to providing consular services to all Mexicans who require it.
