MEXICO IS REELECTED TO THE UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE LAW FOR THE 2013-2019 TERM

• UNCITRAL is the main legal body of the United Nations for international trade law.

• Mexico reaffirms its commitment to promoting trade laws that benefit society.

Mexico was reelected today to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for another six-year term. The elections were held today in New York during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

UNCITRAL, created in 1966 with headquarters in Vienna, Austria, has 60 members. The 30 members elected today will join the commission on June 24, 2013 and their term will expire in June 2019. UNCITRAL is the United Nation’s main legal body for international trade law.

By participating in UNCITRAL, Mexico reaffirms its commitment to encouraging and supporting, nationally and internationally, such trade measures such as encouraging the registration of security interests, analyzing the regulatory framework for microfinance and transparency in arbitration, among others. Mexico will also try to ensure that the work and legal progress made by UNCITRAL have a positive impact on society.

UNCITRAL aims to eliminate or reduce legal obstacles to international trade and to progressively modernize and harmonize trade law. It also coordinates the work of organizations directly or indirectly involved in trade, promotes the acceptance and application of standards and prepares legal texts. Much of the complex structure of legal norms and international agreements governing trade relations in the world today is the result of lengthy and detailed consultations and negotiations organized by UNCITRAL.

Mexico has been continuously involved in UNCITRAL since joining in 1968. In recognition of their work, the Mexican jurists Jorge Barrera Graf (1972), José María Abascal Zamora (1992) and Alejandro Ogarrio Reyes-España (2001) have served as presidents of the Commission.
