THE IFE RECOGNIZES THE FOREIGN MINISTRY FOR ITS HELP WITH THE 2012 ELECTION The President and Electoral Councilors of the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) recognized the Mexican Foreign Ministry for its help during the 2011/2012 federal election with the votes of Mexicans abroad. The IFE and the Foreign Ministry signed two legal agreements, a framework agreement and a specific cooperation agreement so that, for the first time, the IFE had staff in 30 consulates in the United States to help Mexicans to register to receive ballots. As a result, 4 out of every 10 people who filled out their applications online did so with help from the IFE support staff. This collaboration resulted in a 23 percent increase in the participation of Mexicans abroad and reduced the cost of the program for voters abroad by 54 percent compared to the last election, which demonstrates that the interinstitutional cooperation uses resources more efficiently and, above all, leads to better customer service. The following were present at the event: for the IFE, President Leonardo Valdés Zurita and Electoral Councilors Francisco Javier Guerrero Aguirre and Marco Antonio Baños Martinez; the Coordinator of the Vote for Mexicans Abroad, Dalia Moreno Lopez; and IFE’s Social Communication Coordinator, José Luis Alcudia Goya. The Foreign Ministry was represented by Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa; the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Ambassador Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo; the Head of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME), Candido Morales Rosas; IME Executive Director Francisco Javier Díaz de León, and Director General of Social Communication, Carla Sánchez Armas.
