THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY ADOPTS MEXICO’S RESOLUTION ON INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AGAINST DRUGS

• The resolution includes the Mexican president’s proposal to hold a special session of the UN General Assembly on drugs.

• It was co-sponsored by 95 countries including several in Latin America and the Caribbean, the European Union and Japan, China, Australia and the U.S.

The Foreign Ministry is pleased to report that the 67th UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution submitted by Mexico on international cooperation against the world drug problem.

Ninety-five member countries of the United Nations co-sponsored the draft resolution, including several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, the European Union and Japan, China, Australia and the United States.

The Mexican president’s proposal received the support of the presidents of Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica, Belize and Honduras and the Iberoamerican Summit held recently in Cadiz.

The resolution includes President Felipe Calderon’s proposal, made during his address to the UN General Assembly last September, to hold a special session of the General Assembly to review current policies and strategies related to the global drug problem. The session will be held in early 2016, after an intensive preparatory process that will begin next year.

The last special session of the UN General Assembly to address the drug issue was held 14 years ago in 1998, also at Mexico’s initiative.
