THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT CONVEYS ITS CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATH OF BRAZILIAN ARCHITECT OSCAR NIEMEYER On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry conveys its deepest condolences to the Brazilian government and, especially, to the family of renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who died this afternoon at 104 years of age. Oscar Niemeyer’s architectural work is internationally known. Of particular importance is his role in designing Brasilia, the Brazilian capital inaugurated in 1960. His most emblematic public buildings include Brazil’s National Congress, the Planalto and Alvorada palaces (the presidential palace and residence, respectively), Itamaraty (the Foreign Ministry) and Brasilia’s cathedral. He was also part of the team that designed the United Nations building. He received numerous awards for his contributions to contemporary architecture.
