INAUGURATION OF KENSCOFF MARKET IN HAITI

The Kenscoff communal market was inaugurated on December 24 in Haiti. The market was refurbished thanks to aid from Mexico.

The market, with an area of 2,000 square meters, is able to house 400 merchants’ stalls and will be open every day of the week. It will be operated by a committee of citizens to ensure its smooth operation and sustainability. It has a water collection system and sanitary facilities, including toilets, showers, sinks and a food sanitation area.

The Minister for Women and Women's Rights, Marie Yanick Mezile, and the Director for Promotion and Institutional Capacity Building of the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), Bertrand Roy, led the inauguration.

Haitian officials thanked Mexico for its important contribution to Haiti and welcomed the market’s re-opening. Mexico's ambassador in Haiti, Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno, said that Mexico’s comprehensive aid efforts in Haiti involve the construction or rehabilitation of 16 public markets with an investment of just over five million dollars.

During the inauguration, three vendors at the market gave Ambassador Lopez Moreno a commemorative plaque thanking Mexico helping to restore the market. There was a procession with baskets of fruit and vegetables while "Mexico Lindo y Querido" played in the background.
