PRESIDENT ENRIQUE PEÑA NIETO TRAVELS TO CHILE AND URUGUAY

• In Santiago, Chile, the Mexican President will participate in the first CELAC-EU Summit and the first CELAC Summit.

• He will also participate in the 4th CELAC-EU Business Summit.

• The president will attend the sixth summit of the Pacific Alliance.

• After Chile, he will make an official visit to Uruguay.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will travel this Thursday to Santiago, Chile, where he will participate in the following meetings:

• First Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the European Union (CELAC-EU)

• First CELAC Summit

• Sixth Summit of the Pacific Alliance, during which he will meet with the presidents of Chile, Colombia and Peru

• Fourth CELAC-EU Business Summit

These meetings will be held from January 26-28.

Afterwards, on January 28, the President will make an official visit to Uruguay at the invitation of Uruguayan President José Alberto Mujica Cordano.

The president’s participation in the first CELAC-EU Summit, which will be attended by heads of state, heads of government and other representatives from 60 countries, will bring Mexico’s vision to the event’s main theme: "Alliance for Sustainable Development: Promoting Quality Social and Environmental Investments."

The leaders will review the progress made in creating a strategic alliance between Latin America and Europe and they will adopt an action plan with concrete initiatives for the next two years that focuses on science, research, innovation and technology; sustainable development; education and jobs; the world drug problem; gender and investments.

Leaders and representatives from the 33 countries in our region will attend the first CELAC Summit, where President Enrique Peña Nieto will renew Mexico's commitment to the process of integration and development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Latin American and Caribbean leaders will adopt the 2013 Santiago Action Plan, which includes activities proposed by the countries involved in the following areas: infrastructure, finance, energy, education, culture, social development, migration and humanitarian aid.

During the summit, the president will hold additional meetings with other heads of state and government, both from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe to review and promote bilateral issues.

While at the sixth summit of the Pacific Alliance, President Peña Nieto will renew his commitment to promoting and liberalizing trade in Latin America. He will reiterate Mexico’s support for the Alliance, whose members share Mexico’s belief in an open economy.

The president will also participate in the closing of the fourth CELAC-EU Business Summit.

While in Chile, President Peña Nieto will be received at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) by its Executive Secretary, Alicia Barcena. He will explore new options for trade and investment in the region together with Mexican and Latin American businessmen.

During his visit to Uruguay on Monday, January 28th, the president will review the progress of the bilateral relationship within the framework of the Strategic Partnership Agreement between Mexico and Uruguay.

Both leaders will seek new areas of cooperation to strengthen all aspects of the relationship. While in Montevideo, the Mexican president will visit the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU) to learn about the Educational Connectivity Program for Basic Computer Learning Online (CEIBAL Plan) and to exchange ideas and experiences on the projects that have been implemented successfully in Chile related to the innovation of technology and educational services.
