FOREIGN SECRETARY JOSE ANTONIO MEADE MEETS WITH OAS SECRETARY GENERAL JOSÉ MIGUEL INSULZA Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade Kuribreña received the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, in his offices. During their meeting, they discussed the process of strengthening the inter-American human rights system—in which Mexico has played a key role—and the hemisphere’s democratic institutions, highlighting Mexico’s support for both of these issues. They also discussed the political situation in the region and the importance of the OAS Electoral Observation Missions to the political process, and Mexico’s participation in them. Foreign Secretary Meade stressed that Mexico sees the OAS as the most important hemispheric organization for political consultation and dialogue. Mexico is committed to the OAS´ agenda, especially regarding issues of collective interest that seek to achieve an inclusive and prosperous continent that is at peace. They agreed that Mexico will continue supporting the work of the OAS, which faces the enormous challenge of carrying out the many duties with which it is tasked by the Member States in a wide variety of areas. Secretary General Insulza emphasized the active role played by Mexico in the integration and development of the American continent. He mentioned the many projects in which Mexico participates with the OAS that have been strengthened in recent years. As part of his official visit, the OAS Secretary General will meet tomorrow with President Enrique Peña Nieto.
