JOSÉ ANTONIO MEADE MEETS WITH THE EUROPEAN AMBASSADORS ACCREDITED IN MEXICO In the Foreign Ministry today, Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade met with the European ambassadors accredited in Mexico for a general discussion of Mexico’s relationship with Europe, the challenges ahead and ways to strengthen cooperation and the political and economic ties. In his message to the European diplomats, Foreign Secretary Meade discussed the five goals of President Enrique Peña’s administration, with emphasis on Mexico’s commitment to assuming its global responsibilities. The Foreign Secretary spoke about the strengths and opportunities that Mexico offers to the world, as well as those offered to Mexico by the European representatives posted to our country. With a population of approximately 740 million, Europe includes five of the ten top global economies. It is a global trading power and receives more tourists than anywhere else in the world. Mexico offers many advantages for European investors thanks to its network of free trade agreements that provide access to many markets around the world, its skilled labor and low production costs, and its financial stability and positive economic growth in times of crisis. The Foreign Ministry will seek to take advantage of its areas of agreement with Europe regarding such items on the international agenda as respect for human rights, the fight against transnational organized crime, public safety and climate change, among others. Lastly, Foreign Secretary Meade discussed President Peña Nieto’s meetings with some of his European counterparts in Santiago, Chile last January during the first summit between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the European Union (CELAC – EU).
