FOREIGN SECRETARY MEADE MEETS WITH THE HEADS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS ACCREDITED IN MEXICO

• They discussed the close relationship between Mexico and the international organizations.

• Mexico plays a key and active role in the most important multilateral forums.

This morning in the Foreign Ministry, Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade met with the heads of the international organizations accredited in Mexico to discuss the relationships and cooperation initiatives that Mexico has with these organizations.

The Foreign Secretary spoke about the five guiding principles established by President Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration, putting special emphasis on the fifth one: Mexico as a global actor. He also discussed the foreign policy commitments of the Pact for Mexico.

The Foreign Secretary explained Mexico’s priorities in the multilateral forums, which include the Post-2015 Development Agenda; climate change; human rights in Mexico and the world; strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System; the outstanding work done by Mexicans in the international organizations; the important and cross-cutting dialogue with civil society organizations; and others.

Ambassador Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo, the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, said that Mexico is an important actor in the international forums, where it plays a key role in the most important issues on the current international agenda. He expressed his appreciation for and stressed the positive impact of and the progress made in cooperation between the United Nations and Mexico.

Representing the international organizations, Marcia de Castro, the Resident Representative of the United Nations in Mexico, thanked Foreign Secretary Meade for his invitation and called for strengthening the existing cooperation programs with Mexico.

The meeting, part of the Foreign Ministry’s strategy of reaching out to the international representatives in Mexico, enabled the participants to freely exchange ideas and comments amongst themselves.
