THE INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS RE-ELECTS A MEXICAN TO LEAD IT

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has re-elected Mexican citizen Dr. José de Jesús Orozco Henríquez as its chair.

The reelection of this prominent Mexican jurist is recognition by the Inter-American Commission of Dr. Orozco’s contribution to developing and strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System, a priority for the Organization of American States (OAS).

Dr. José de Jesús Orozco Henríquez was elected as a commissioner in June 2009 by the OAS General Assembly. He has served as its chair since March 2012. The Mexican government has also nominated Dr. Orozco for reelection as commissioner for the 2014-2017 term.

The Mexican government applauds Dr. Orozco’s reelection as chair of the Inter-American Commission and reiterates its full commitment and cooperation in promoting and protecting human rights in the American hemisphere.

The IACHR is one of the OAS’ main organs. It is composed of seven independent members who are elected by the General Assembly in their personal capacity and do not represent their countries of origin or residence.
