FOREIGN SECRETARY JOSÉ ANTONIO MEADE MEETS WITH THE COMMISSION FOR THE RENEWAL OF THE IBEROAMERICAN CONFERENCE

Foreign Secretary José Antonio Meade received a visit today from the Committee for the Renewal of the Iberoamerican Conference, led by former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and comprised of the Iberoamerican Secretary General Enrique V. Iglesias and Ambassador Emeritus Patricia Espinosa.

The Commission was established during the 22nd Iberoamerican Summit (Cadiz, Spain, November 16-17, 2012) to make recommendations to strengthen and update the Iberoamerican Conference and to restructure the Secretariat.

The Commission has begun talks with the 22 countries of the Iberoamerican Conference and will deliver its report to the Foreign Ministers during a special meeting to be held in Panama on June 28th.

At the meeting, the Foreign Secretary said that Mexico was committed to strengthening the Conference, which is an important forum for dialogue and cooperation, and which Mexico has promoted since its creation in Guadalajara in 1991. He offered his support to the commission and reiterated Mexico's offer to host the 24th Summit of Heads of State and Government.
