PRESIDENT PEÑA NIETO TO TRAVEL TO THE VATICAN FOR POPE FRANCIS’ INSTALLATION CEREMONY
President Enrique Peña Nieto will attend the installation ceremony of Pope Francis as head of the Vatican State on Tuesday, March 19th. During his first visit as president to the Holy See, President Peña Nieto will make contact with the newly-elected Pope and other senior members of the Roman Curia.
During his visit, the President will reiterate the importance Mexico attaches to the Holy See at the bilateral political level, because of its special relationship with the people of Mexico and also given its role as a major player in the multilateral arena.
President Peña Nieto will extend an invitation to the new Pope to make a visit to Mexico. The Mexican president’s presence at this ceremony of global importance that brings together Heads of State and/or Government and well-known individuals from various countries and regions of the world is due to the bonds of friendship, cooperation and respect that have characterized the relationship between Mexico and the Holy See.
Mexico and the Vatican share views on the rejection of the death penalty, the need to strengthen the United Nations and other important global issues such as peace, international security, the promotion of a just world order, the defense of human rights, climate change, nuclear disarmament and food security, among others.
