THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT FILES A NEW "FRIEND OF THE COURT" BRIEF IN THE LAWSUIT AGAINST SOUTH CAROLINA SB 20
The Foreign Ministry reports that the Mexican government filed a "Friend of the Court" brief yesterday in the US Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in support of the suits brought against South Carolina SB 20 by the U.S. government and various civil society organizations.
After the Supreme Court decision in the case of Arizona vs. the United States, the South Carolina District Court allowed certain sections of SB20—also known as Act 69—to enter into force, but ruled to maintain the preliminary suspension of the section that prohibits harboring and transporting undocumented persons. The aim of the new recourses is to maintain this preliminary suspension.
The Mexican government expresses its appreciation to the governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay for joining the amicus brief.
The Mexican government will continue to use all the means at its disposal to protect the fundamental rights of Mexicans abroad, regardless of their immigration status. |
