THE FOREIGN MINISTRY MOURNS THE DEATH OF AMBASSADOR JOSÉ GALLÁSTEGUI

 

The Foreign Ministry regrets to report the death of Ambassador Emeritus José Salvador Gallástegui Contreras, who died today in Mexico City.

 

Ambassador Gallástegui was a very distinguished career member of the Mexican Foreign Service (SEM) who entered as Vice Consul in 1952 and rose to the rank of Ambassador in 1963.

 

In recognition of his outstanding diplomatic career, he was honored by the president with the title of Eminent Ambassador in 1994 and Ambassador Emeritus in 1998.

 

He held various positions in the Foreign Ministry, including Private Secretary to the Secretary (1959-1964), Undersecretary for Management and Budget (1965-1970) and Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs (1970-1976).

 

Abroad, Ambassador Gallástegui was attached to the Embassy of Mexico in France (1952-1953) and the Mexican delegation to the UN in New York (1976-1978).

 

The viewing will be today at a funeral home on Felix Cuevas Street beginning at 14:30.

 

The staff of the Foreign Ministry and the members of the Mexican Foreign Service express their deepest sympathy to the family and relatives of Ambassador Gallástegui for their irreparable loss.
