MEXICO REGRETS THE DEATH OF FORMER BRITISH PRIME MINISTER MARGARET THATCHER

On behalf of the Mexican government, the Foreign Ministry expresses its regret for the death of Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom between 1979 and 1990. Mrs. Thatcher, whose term in office was the longest of any British prime minister in the twentieth century, was a high-profile political figure in England and worldwide.

As Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher visited Mexico in 1981 for the North-South Summit held in Cancun, Quintana Roo, subsequently expressing her appreciation for the "fascinating history and cultural diversity" of Mexico.  Towards the end of her term, the United Kingdom became the third-largest investor in Mexico.

Mexico recognizes former Prime Minister Thatcher’s legacy of economic modernization and structural transformation in the United Kingdom, as well as the progress and achievements accomplished during her term in the relationship between Mexico and Great Britain, which has historically been characterized by bilateral dialogue and cooperation.
