STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF MEXICO ON THE INTRODUCTION OF A COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM BILL IN THE UNITED STATES

The Government of Mexico welcomes the introduction of the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013” in the United States Senate. The formal introduction of a comprehensive immigration reform bill, with bipartisan support and the input of numerous US stakeholders, is a positive step.

The commitment expressed on this issue by President Barack Obama and members of both parties in Congress is very encouraging. As the legislative process unfolds in the United States, it is crucial that the contributions of immigrants be considered and their rights safeguarded. It is also important to take full advantage of the existing social bonds and complementary economic ties we share in North America.

The Government of Mexico will closely follow this debate, reinforce its communication mechanisms, and present objective information on the subject. The approval of a comprehensive immigration reform bill has the potential to strengthen the entire region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy and the consular network in the United States, will reinforce its assistance and protection of Mexican nationals, regardless of their immigration status. It will also implement programs as needed to modernize its consular services and ensure their efficiency.
