THE FOREIGN MINISTRY CONVEYS ITS CONDOLENCES FOR THE DEATH OF ARCHITECT PEDRO RAMIREZ VAZQUEZ

The Foreign Ministry conveys its sincere condolences to family and friends of the Mexican architect and urbanist, Pedro Ramirez Vazquez, who died on April 16th.

Ramírez Vázquez built some of the most emblematic buildings of Mexico, including the National Anthropology Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Lazaro Legislative Palace and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, among many others.

Pedro Ramirez Vazquez exposed broad and diverse audiences to Mexico’s culture and identity. The Tlatelolco Tower—now the Tlatelolco University Cultural Center—was home to the Mexican Foreign Ministry and to Mexican diplomacy. In honor of this history, the current headquarters of the Mexican Foreign Ministry is named the Tlatelolco Building.

The designs of this Mexican architect can be found outside of Mexico’s borders, as well. Projects such as the Olympic Museum Lausanne and the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland, the Presidential House in Costa Rica, the chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe in St. Peter’s Basilica and the Museum of Black Civilizations in Senegal represent Mexico around the world.

He also brought prestige and dignity to Mexico through the many international awards he received, such as the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture; the Milan Triennial XII Grand Prix for the prefabricated country school project; the Gold Medal of the VIII Biennial of Sao Paulo; and the Jean Tschumi Prize of the International Union of Architects.
