The Mexican president, together with the Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean countries, will discuss the region’s common concerns and priorities, especially in trade, tourism, reducing the risk of natural disasters and transportation.
During his trip, President Peña Nieto will also hold a bilateral meeting with Haitian President Michel Martelly to discuss cooperation between Mexico and Haiti and to explore ways to expand trade and investment.
The Mexican president will attend the ACS Plenary Session in Port au Prince and a luncheon hosted by President Michel Martelly for the leaders attending the meeting.
During the plenary session, President Peña Nieto will speak about the importance of cooperation for regional development for the benefit of the Caribbean people.
With this high-level visit, Mexico demonstrates its commitment to working together to achieve the goals of the 1994 convention signed in Cartagena that gave birth to the ACS, among which are the sustainable use of the Caribbean Sea. It also reiterates its commitment to cooperating with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Together, the ACS member countries comprise an area of more than 5 million square kilometers and 274 million inhabitants. Mexico's trade with these countries exceeds 20 billion dollars annually.
