MEXICO WAS ELECTED TO THE LEGAL AND TECHNICAL COMMISSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL SEABED AUTHORITY
The Foreign Ministry reports that, on August 14th during the 12th session of the ISA in Kingston, Jamaica, Mexico was elected by consensus to the Legal and Technical Commission of the International Seabed Authority for the 2007-2011 period. Mexico will be represented by Elva G. Escobar.
The Legal and Technical Commission makes recommendations to the ISA Council and Assembly regarding the adoption of regulations related to the cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and polymetallic sulphide resources on the international seabed that are considered to belong to all humanity.
The profile and scientific experience of Elba G. Escobar will be very valuable to the commission. She is currently the head of the academic unit in oceanographic and coastal systems of the Institute of Oceanography and Limnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), where she has done important research on the ecology of deep-sea marine ecosystems and on marine biodiversity.
She is also a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. She has published various books and articles and received the first prize for writings in the press on health sciences. She has received awards and titles such as the Juana Ramírez de Asbaje award given by the UNAM. In addition, Elba G. Escobar has received recognition as a scientific expert in marine sciences research by the United Nations.
With its participation in the ISA and now on its legal and technical commission, Mexico renews its commitment to the international protection and preservation of this important heritage for humanity.
